We are living in the golden age of map design. With the emergence of Pyton, R and other coding languages and libraries like D3 – designers have been supercharged with tools that bring their talents to the next level. It’s easier to connect to data feeds, cloud services, databases, online spreadsheets.
Who are the most interesting and visually stunning designers producing art, product and content today?
Milos is making stunning R based maps. What’s unique about Milos is how he offers free courses on his YouTube channel. They are step by step tutorials are super easy to follow. Any person with moderate skills will be able to create beautiful static and interactive maps. Milos is also a super nice and generous guy – always willing to help in my experience.

Known as Tterence on BlueSky, he is a R map master, and beautiful map maker. Here’s a map of Indonesia showing all earthquakes greater than magnitude 5.0 from 1923 to 2023.

Dr. Dominic Royé is a brilliant Doctor in Physical Geography. He posts R based maps related to climate and geography in Spain and beyond. Below is an R polygon map of the growth of Valencia Spain since 1890.

Gilberto Leon is a Mexican professor and award winning designer covering many important issues in Mexico.

Robert Hodgin is the co-creator of the Cinder C++ framework. He produces innovative and very creative visualizations.

Nicola Rennie is a brilliant mind in data science – producing incredibly insightful maps.

Stephen Kennedy created this beautiful video visualization of the North Woods in Wisconsin. He is a super talented designer with his own cartography shop.
